Harley Granville-Barker was a contemporary of George Bernard Shaw and his compatriot, though considerably younger than Shaw. Their writing styles are remarkably similar, but Granville-Barker wrote material that, in his day, was highly controversial if not scandalous. It's wonderful stuff. These plays aren't produced nearly enough. It should be noted that this volume contains the early, original versions of Granville-Barker plays, which he rewrote 20 years or more later. The two-volume paperback edition of his plays has the later versions. The comedy bubbles, and the social issues are viscerally tackled. His plays should be performed far, far more often.
